Our History

From hostel to home

Crew House was established in 1977 in the historic UC Campus neighborhood of Arcata, California. Born as a youth hostel, it welcomed travelers passing through the redwoods and welcomed the wandering spirit that defines Humboldt County.

It later turned into a co-living home for the university's very first crew team — and the name stuck. Athletes, scholars, and adventurers all found their way through these doors, and something special took root.

In 1985, Crew House was reimagined into what it is today: a gorgeous 18-room co-living community where smart, motivated people from all walks of life come together under one roof.

Whether you're a student, a professional, or somewhere in between, you'll find yourself surrounded by good energy, great neighbors, and a place that genuinely feels like home.

How We Live Together

Our Community Values

Crew House works because the people who live here actually give a damn. These are the values that guide daily life.

Mutual Respect

Everyone's space and time is honored. We treat shared areas the way we'd want others to treat ours.

Shared Responsibility

We share the upkeep, the chores, and the care of our home. It takes all of us to keep this place great.

Open Communication

Issues get talked out, not bottled up. Monthly house meetings keep everyone aligned and heard.

Good Energy Only

We're drawn to people who bring positive, curious, open energy. Life's too short for drama.

Sustainability

We compost, recycle, and try to tread lightly. Arcata's natural beauty is worth protecting.

Diverse Community

Students, professionals, artists, locals, travelers — everyone's welcome. Diverse perspectives make for a richer home.
